This
year Epona initiated our first March break camp.
For four days the youth arrived each day for riding and recreation.
We were very fortunate that the weather was also co-operative and
enjoyable. Epona
would like to welcome Nancy Bergeron as our Saturday tutor.
Nancy brings with her a wealth of experience as a high school
teacher. Kiki
Dennis, one of our recent high school graduates and now a CEGEP student
has returned to support our program in the role of a mentor. Kiki’s
equestrian and exceptional leadership skills make her an excellent role
model in assisting the youth in developing their equestrian knowledge and
social interactions. Epona
would like to welcome Anita Bowman as our certified coach. Anita has long been associated with Free Spirit and we
welcome her as our new equestrian instructor. Jackie
Poirier, one of the founding members of the Epona foundation has made the
decision to resign as equestrian director.
Jackie will maintain a connection with Epona as we will continue to
utilize Free Spirit stable for the equestrian part of our stay-in-school
program. Epona thanks Jackie
for the time and energy she has given to help shape the equestrian part of
our program.
April
2nd was the start of our spring session.
We received many applications, which means we are doing some good
out there. The spring session
runs until June 11. Summer
camp takes place July 25-29. Space
is limited and applications are now being accepted. April
also brings us to the start of our annual sponsorship drive to fund our
summer camp. Those of you who
have been with us from the start we cannot thank you enough for how your
continual financial support keeps us going and allows us to continue our
work to help children stay in school and see their own successes. Peter

Where
would we be with out them…… Gabe
Mapp, and his tremendous and continuous support in driving the kids to and
from the ranch, being the liaison with the parents and helping the kids
stay on track while at the ranch. Gabe
has been with us since the beginning….we salute you! Sandu
Strunga, came to us a few years ago just to help out for one day and has
yet to leave. Sandu maintains
the overall management of the clubhouse, makes all the meals, does the
scheduling, sorts through the applications , throws in the odd editorial,
keeps track of the riding clothing, keeps me in line and on schedule, have
I left anything out?? Darlene
Job, provides bi-weekly continuous support by meeting and developing the
tutoring needs of our youth and maintains a connection with the schools.
Atiba
Howell, like his sister Kiki, graduated from student to volunteer and now
has become a member of the committee and is one of the van drivers. Atiba
does all this while maintaining several jobs and his CEGEP studies!
Like most of us, he is learning at a young age to balance a busy
workload while giving back to his community. Epona
would also like to thank Carol Van Vlaardigan and the team at CTV for
their continued airing of Epona’s work within the community.
To our
friends of Epona, Many of our supporters have found donating through Canadahelps.org to be quick, reliable and secure. Please take a moment to make that donation and support a program you know to be invested in our youth of today. On behalf of our youth, families and volunteers we thank you for making this program possible. Peter
